Kelsey and Ben’s Mount Tam Engagement Portraits

mount tam engagement portraits

Kelsey and Ben were planning their June wedding while both finishing PhDs, which sounds like (and is) a LOT, but they approached it with cooperation, humor and joy that was really beautiful to be a part of. Because they are both scientists with focuses on the natural world – she on trees and he on the littlest fauna of the forest like newts (or at least this is the way my unscientific brain is remembering the explanations) – they wanted as much of their celebration to be in outdoors as possible.  They’re also avid rock climbers, so wanted to throw in a little sunset free climb in at the end…  why not?!

This was one of the coolest engagement shoots I’ve ever done.  We drove around Mt Tamalpais, talking about the mutualism of local flora and fauna.  I’d ask Kelsey “and what’s THAT tree?” as we zoomed past.  Ben would share information about native, local lizards. They are such a sweet, cute couple who work beautifully together. The whole photo shoot experience left us feeling like close friends.

When you’re looking for someone who will be photographing you and yours in an emotionally intimate way on your wedding day, I think having your photographer be an actual friend is key.  I try to exude trust and understanding – as well as playfulness – so that everyone knows we’re in this together, and there’s no risk of trying something and feeling too silly (a little silly is always good!).

Also, I just finally watched “Free Solo” and now my mind is blown by anyone doing ANY amount of rock climbing, so it was fun to get to watch them on their mini climb while the sun set over the Bay.

Just wait for their wedding photos, coming soon!!
